Mara del Pilar and José "Jaime" Peréz. The two of them had tied the knot. They left because of the danger they faced there. Therefore, they were understandably alarmed by reports of gunfire near the congresswoman's residence. Jamie left to have a look. He walked in on the congresswoman lying on the ground. He was covered in blood but never saw the perpetrator. Unfortunately, Jamie was held responsible for her death. The police had arrested him for murder.
Before Robyn McCall began representing Jaime, many people had already decided that he must have committed the crime because he was an immigrant. Mrs. Jaime had her hired on. Marisol is adamant that Jamie is innocent. She assured me that in their own land, they were upstanding citizens. They were young, accomplished people whose home nation had become corrupt to the point that they had to leave. None of them were bad guys. They were being falsely accused of the crime because of their foreign origin.
The fact that everyone involved wanted to feel superior because of the congresswoman's death doesn't help matters. Rep. Acevedo was known for her boldness in the House. She held highly tolerant views. Politics used to be a topic on which people could have civil disagreements and then go out for a drink together, but these days it seems like people take a side before hearing the other side out. And only after she passed away did they finally begin to treat the congresswoman with the dignity she deserved.
They now only mention how much they liked working with her or how much they respected her. They fail to remember that they were inciting their followers to send her death threats right up until the moment she passed away. They felt she deserved it at the time. Now that she is dead, they are asking for respect as if they had somehow proved a point. After one of the immigrants was accused of killing her, her supporters ceased advocating for her immigration law. Others would also perish without assistance, and the extreme right couldn't help but feel superior over her passing. The death of the congresswoman was being used as an excuse for their actions.

Without Elena, there was nobody to fight back. No one else seemed interested in taking on these problems without her prodding them. Robyn, however, started investigating the circumstances of her passing. Elena, she learned, had left the couple some jewels before she passed away. She hoped that by allowing Marisol to sell part of her jewels, she might help them get money quickly. It was meant to be a favor, but if the cops found out, Jamie would be in a bad position. So Robyn proceeded to go further.
Robyn learned that every night there was a protestor outside the house. He was the one who posted placards calling for the serpent's head to be severed, and he frequently referred to the congresswoman as "the snake." Harry tracked out the individual who had been posting signs. His construction company failed, he claimed, because of illegal payments made to immigrants. He overlooked the fact that if he assisted illegal immigrants in securing legal employment, his rivals would be unable to undercut his prices.
He was an idiot jerk, not even an intelligent idiot. He also had a plausible explanation for his absence. He had the signs up by 7:00 p.m. that night and was safe at home when the murder occurred. A member of the congresswoman's staff claimed, however, to have seen the placard in question. Lacey Young's involvement was no secret to Robyn and her crew. Unfortunately, the investigator who was given her name was too late to prevent Lacey's murder. It appears that Lacey was involved in a blackmail plot. Rep. Grey was known to secretly install listening devices on progressive members of Congress.

And then use the knowledge to threaten them into voting his way by whatever means necessary. Grey was able to capture audio of the murder itself. He was only able to get Lacey to put the device on the congresswoman because Lacey was taking money from the campaign in secret. Only Elena witnessed her cheating. She pulled a pistol on Lacey and made a threat. Dueling over it resulted to Lacey's death. Grey then had Lacey murdered so that she could never reveal his plan. It was all orchestrated by Grey and his assistant. Robyn discovered the evidence they needed to blackmail them.
Both guys will spend the remainder of their life in jail because of this. Vi was also aided by Dante, the detective. A foster care placement caused the brothers to become separated, but the detective was able to find the missing sibling and bring them back together. Dante, though, started researching Lo-Lo. The man was a suspect in the shooting of his friend, he thought. Even after being cautioned to back off by another investigator, he continued to accuse him in a second shooting.
