The red-bellied black snake is a common species in eastern Australia. While these snakes are not usually aggressive unless provoked, their bites can cause injury and illness.

This story is a reminder to all pet owners, even if you don't live in Australia, to be cautious of snakes around their pets. The ASPCA reports over 100,000 venomous snake bites in dogs and cats annually in the United States, with mortality rates ranging from 1 to 30 percent depending on various factors.
