Ron Jeremy Escaped Trial On Harassment With Dementia Diagnosis
There won't be a trial for Ron Jeremy. Jeremy was accused of many charges of sexual assault back in June 2020 for a number of alleged acts that allegedly happened over the period of decades. Ultimately, he was charged with more than 30 charges involving 20 alleged victims. The former adult film star has been imprisoned since then while awaiting trial since he would have received a sentence of several years in jail if found guilty.
The L.A. Times has now announced that the trial will not go on. The source says that there is no evidence that Jeremy is fabricating his symptoms and that mental health professionals consulted by both the prosecution and the defense concur that Jeremy has "serious dementia." Jeremy will be found incapable to stand trial as a result, according to L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson.
Thompson said “As a result of the agreement of the experts, the defendant will be declared incompetent to stand trial ... his prognosis for improvement is not good. If he does not improve, we will not be able to try him for his crimes. Because criminal proceedings are suspended as long as he is incompetent, we also cannot get a guilty plea from him or discuss other measures to get justice for the victims in this case.”
The specialists arrived at this conclusion after looking through medical records and speaking with members of Jeremy's family. Thompson stated that previous to Jeremy's arrest in 2020, family members had already believed that he could have dementia, which "resulted in his driver's license being taken away."
Once deemed incompetent, Jeremy is anticipated to be admitted to a state-run facility. Although he could be allowed to stand trial later if he makes progress, it's unlikely that will happen because Jeremy's dementia is a degenerative condition from which he won't likely recover. In a statement, the district attorney's office noted that when the initial charges were brought, the seriousness of Jeremy's sickness was not known to the prosecution.
“Although his attorney expressed some concern for his declining faculties, we believed him to be competent at the time of filing based upon interviews we conducted with him, among other reasons. We had no records at the time of filing indicating that he had a dementia diagnosis.” spokesman Greg Risling said.
Jeremy is obviously most recognized for his work in the adult film industry, but he was also well-known elsewhere. He appeared as an actor in several movies, many of which were Troma productions including Citizen Toxie and Tromeo and Juliet. Additionally, Jeremy had appearances in the movies Bruce Almighty, The Boondock Saints, and Orgazmo.
Additionally, Jeremy frequently made appearances in a variety of television programs and took part in several seasons of The Surreal Life. He also had a significant cameo on a Chappelle's Show episode that aired on Comedy Central. After Jeremy was accused of sexual assault in 2020, the program was taken off from streaming services.
