Researchers Discover That Whales And Dolphins Have Culture Similar To Humans

Dolphins and whales, belonging to the cetaceans group, are among the biggest inhabitants of the ocean. Besides their enormous body, they have large brains, which take credit for their brilliant intelligence. Scientists believe that these marine residents have built similar social lives to ours. They are able to form complex bonds, regional dialects, and one-to-one chats.
“We know whales and dolphins also have exceptionally large and anatomically sophisticated brains and, therefore, have created a similar marine-based culture.” Susanne Shultz, from the University of Manchester in the UK, explains.

In which way is their culture similar to ours?

Whales and dolphins can perform a number of behaviors similar to humans. They have complex alliance relationships between individuals or groups when they collaborate for mutual benefits. Furthermore, they hunt together and teach each other how to hunt and use tools, which refers to the social transfer of hunting techniques.

Interestingly, they can use complex vocalizations. This trait allows them to have various dialects in different regions and unique whistles serving as names. In addition, researchers found out that they practice social play, cooperation with other species, including humans, and alloparenting-taking care of children of other individuals.

Is it possible that they are able to evolve on the same level as humans?

Though whales and dolphins are intelligent and have a complex social life, they will unlikely go through revolutionary developments like humans. “Unfortunately, they won’t ever mimic our great metropolises and technologies because they didn’t evolve opposable thumbs,” says Shultz.

Despite that, many fascinating characteristics in the life of these mammals need to be investigated more. It's apparent that the more we learn about them, the more we adore these friendly guys. Sadly, an increasing number of whales and dolphins are suffering from polluted habitats, an acute shortage of food, and bycatching.
