On February 10, 2023, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, better known as "AKA," a South African rapper, passed away at the age of 35.
Born and raised in Cape Town, Forbes began his career by performing at local events and gigs, gradually earning recognition until his breakthrough hit "Victory Lap" from his debut album Altar Ego. While he did not achieve another smash hit like "Victory Lap," Forbes established himself as a prominent figure in the South African rap scene, even performing as a special guest at WWE events in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Sadly, Forbes was fatally shot outside a nightclub in Durban during his birthday celebrations, leaving behind a promising career and a grieving music industry. The South African rap community is deeply saddened by the loss of this young rising star.

On January 1, 2023, Lola Chantarelle Mitchell, known professionally as Gangsta Boo, passed away at the age of 43. She was a pioneering female rapper, best known for her time in the southern hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, which she joined at just 15 years old.
Gangsta Boo collaborated on six albums with the group before leaving to focus on her solo career, which included the release of her debut album Enquiring Minds. The album achieved moderate commercial success and helped establish her as a solo artist.
Gangsta Boo continued to release solo music and collaborate with other hip-hop icons, such as Eminem and Run the Jewels. However, her life was tragically cut short, as TMZ reported that she passed away due to an overdose while partying with a family member. The rap community was left in mourning and took to social media to pay tribute to the trailblazing rapper, who had a significant impact on the industry.

Trugoy the Dove, or David Jolicoeur, a rapper best known for being part of the hit hip-hop group De La Soul, passed away on February 12, 2023, at the age of 54.
Jolicoeur was a highly influential and significant hip-hop artist of the 80s and 90s. He is famous for creating music with a gentler and more accessible tone. He didn't follow the trends, instead making the music he loved, which resonated with fans worldwide.
In 1989, Jolicoeur and De La Soul exploded onto the scene with their debut album "3 Feet High and Rising," instantly becoming phenomenons in the rap game. De La Soul and Jolicoeur continued to create music to this day, with their recent inclusion on the Spider-Man: No Way Home soundtrack. Jolicoeur and his beloved group were part of hip-hop history for over three decades, and their music will continue to resonate with music lovers worldwide.
Although the cause of death remains undisclosed, artists worldwide have utilized social media to commemorate the legendary artist. Producers such as Pharell Williams and Erik Sermon have expressed their condolences. On March 3rd, the group's music will be accessible in a "best-of" collection, providing new and longtime fans the opportunity to appreciate Jolicoeur's incredible talent one last time.
