Puppy Pretends To Be Injured For Treats Then Discovers His Trick Has Gone Wrong

Dogs are absolute attention seekers, and they'll pull all kinds of tricks to make sure they're the center of our world. Their little doggy brains are always full of ideas, and it is pretty funny sometimes to see how they work on their plans. Now, let me introduce to you Piper, the mischievous pup who has developed a clever plan to receive all the attention from his dad.

Piper and his dad, Dennis Gerard, are like two peas in a pod. Gerard always does his best to make Piper satisfied, and sometimes, Piper figures out how to use this to his advantage.

A while back, Piper hurt his paw when he stepped on a bee. His parents wanted to comfort him, so they gave him lots of treats. But even when his paw started feeling better, Piper pretended it still hurt, just to keep the treats coming.

“He was legitimately sore for one day but continued to play it for treats,” Gerard said. “Of course, I am the weakest link and I give him treats, reinforcing the behavior. It's a vicious circle.”

Since then, Piper has been putting on fake acts of leg pain, all to score more treats. Lately, Gerard had had enough of Piper's tricks and decided it was time to change things.

“So I decided it was time to teach him a lesson by asking him if he wanted to go “bye bye” with Daddy” shared Gerard on his Instagram video.

Piper was due for a checkup anyway, so during one of his fake leg injury episodes, his dad decided to take him to the vet. As soon as Piper realized where they were going, he started having second thoughts about his plan. You can even see him shaking at the vet.

Even though Piper wasn't pleased with his sudden vet trip, he still managed to win in the end. "I asked the vet tech to check out his legs," Gerard said. "She played along with it."

“Whether he understood if we were there to scare him straight is debatable,” Gerard said. “However, I can confirm he outplayed me on my plan. I felt so bad for him that I gave him tons of treats and a pup cup when we got home.”

Despite Gerard's best attempts to change Piper's ways, the cheeky pup got exactly what he wanted in the end—more treats and loads of love—and Gerard couldn't help but accept.
