People See Shelter Dog Lying In Wheelbarrow, On Her Way To Be Put Down

Nobody wants to have to put an animal to sleep, especially one that has spent a lot of time living next to people. Unfortunately, the demand for assistance for animals in need is rising while the number of shelters available remains insufficient. Consequently, some shelters face an immensely heartbreaking choice: euthanizing animals that struggle to find adoptive homes.

Among these unfortunate cases was Darla, a timid and affectionate golden retriever whose name appeared on the putting-down list of a local Texas shelter. While it seemed as if there was little hope for this vulnerable canine, destiny took an unexpected turn. A compassionate individual emerged at just the right moment, offering Darla a new lease on life that she was genuinely grateful for.

Darla was too terrified to walk when shelter staff attempted to take her to be put down, so they put her in a wheelbarrow and started to wheel her down the hallway.

Members of Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) were passing by the shelter at that precise moment. They were there to help the overburdened and overpopulated shelter by taking in some of the animals. Once they caught sight of Darla cowering inside the wheelbarrow, they knew she was going with them.

National shelter support director for APA! Jordana Moerbe stated in a press release that "We had to pull her, we had to save her. We hope that she’s able to come out of her shell and be the happy puppy she deserves to be. It's what every one of the pets in the shelter deserves, and that's what we're working so hard for.”

Nobody wants to ever have to put an animal to sleep because of overcrowding, which is why APA! steps in and uses its resources to help save lives that would otherwise be lost.

Following Darla's safe arrival at APA!, she underwent a thorough medical examination to ensure she was in good health. They realized she was only eight months old and still had her entire life ahead of her. They spread the word about Darla to their rescue partners across the nation and were able to place her with Mile High Lab Rescue in Denver, Colorado. They knew that anything was possible with time and love, though she was still extremely afraid.

She was in grave danger of losing her life that day, but she was ultimately saved, and she now has the chance to experience true love. It is such a relief to know that Darla is in the care of her foster family. She is currently secure and is learning how to be a dog.
