Orphaned Baby Zebra And Rescued Infant Rhino Develop Special Bond During Their Darkest Time
Care for Wild, the world's largest orphan rhino sanctuary, seeks to save, rehabilitate, release, and safeguard the animals who come into their care. It was this very sanctuary that saw the development of an inspiring and heartwarming friendship between 2 unlikely best friends. Modjadji, a baby zebra, and Daisy, a newborn rhino were both discovered orphaned in the wild and after the sanctuary took them in, something special was sparked between the two. They found each other, exactly when they needed one another the most.
In the wild, the little zebra Modjadji was found abandoned after a series of storms and excessive amounts of rain. Despite their experience in rhino care, the crew couldn't leave him alone. They named the little zebra Modjadji, which means "rain queen," as a fitting tribute to her past. The poor creature had several ailments to cope with, but the staff kept an eye on her and did everything they could to help the zebra's health.
Daisy the rhino was found alone and struggling in Kruger's National Park-one of Africa's largest game reserves. The newborn rhino was so young that she still had her umbilical cord attached. She was immediately rushed to the sanctuary's intensive care unit. Although it is unknown why exactly the infant was abandoned, she was discovered during a period when poachers slaughtered hundreds of rhinos in a matter of days. At the sanctuary, Daisy was provided round-the-clock care and feeding to boost her immune system and help her maintain her body temperature. It was unclear if she would survive.
Modjadji began interacting with Daisy and the two quickly became good friends, healing and comforting each other. The sanctuary remarked on Modjadji's generosity and care, as well as how the zebra offered immense comfort to the rhino.
"As they grew stronger and braver, their curiosity got the best of them, and they started interacting with each other," Bowker said. "Rhinos are very social animals and require companionship. Modjadji is a fantastic company for Daisy and very affectionate towards her".
After a month together, the two orphaned animals had become more like sisters. Wherever one of them is, the other isn't far behind.
Rachael Pfeiffer, who works at the Care for Wild rhino sanctuary, said of their odd connection, “Modjadji is an amazing company for Daisy and very affectionate toward her. They cuddle together at night, which gives Daisy comfort and security. She is a friend who can be with her 24/7, which helps prevent too much human contact with Daisy.”
