North Charleston Police Officer's Good Deed Goes Viral, Sending Everyone To Tears
A North Charleston police officer is getting a lot of attention on Facebook for something really nice she did. Her name is Martha Lohnes, and she's been working as a police officer in North Charleston since September.
She decided to work in challenging neighborhoods because she feels that's where she can make the biggest difference. She said, "Kind of bad areas with bad things going on, that's where I can shine the most and be the most light."
And it seems like people are noticing her good deeds. She posted a photo on Facebook showing her helping a woman who lives under a bridge. People loved it. Her post got more than 14,000 likes and was shared over 5,000 times.
In the picture, Officer Lohnes is helping clean the woman's foot because it was swollen and infected.
She shared this photo because she wanted to show a different side of police work, one that doesn't make headlines but is just as important.
Officer Lohnes wants people to understand that police officers are humans too, she said, "We're all human," said Lohnes. "All of us are. We all want to get along and have a good relationship. No one wants to hate the other side."
She went back to visit the woman, Priscilla, on Tuesday and found out that EMS units also come to help her every day. Officer Lohnes thinks they're the real heroes that people should recognize.
