Nicolas Cage's Dracula Petrified Fans in Renfield's First Trailer

In the opening moments of the video, Nicholas Hoult's Renfield (from X-Men: First Class) charges into a support group being run by Ghosts actor Brandon Scott Jones and declares, "I need to get out of a toxic relationship." Renfield reveals that the connection is with his superior, Nicolas Cage's portrayal of Count Dracula, who is his employer. The video indicates that Renfield was given special abilities by Dracula in return for tending to the famous vampire's needs and giving him prey like obedient nuns and cheerleaders. Renfield is warned by the support group that if he stops taking care of Dracula's requirements, he won't be able to "grow to full strength." The teaser finishes with an arresting image of Cage's Dracula saying, "Now let's feast," while staring right into the camera.

Renfield was first revealed in November 2019, with Hoult being cast in the lead role in August 2021 and Cage's participation being confirmed in November of that same year. Renfield's production lasted from February 2022 through April 2022. The Walking Dead and Invincible author Robert Kirkman provided the inspiration for the screenplay written by Ryan Ridley (Rick & Morty) and directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie). Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), and Adrian Martinez also appear in the movie (Focus).

A new Dracula movie that would have been a part of Universal's Dark Universe series, a reimagined shared universe that was influenced by the company's "Classic Monsters" franchise, was first announced in July 2014. However, Universal abandoned the Dark Universe after the critical and financial disaster of 2017's The Mummy, choosing instead to create stand-alone films for each monster. The first of these initiatives, The Invisible Man by Leigh Whannell, opened to favorable reviews from critics and made nearly $144 million worldwide on a $7 million budget.

Renfield is produced by Chris McKay, Bryan, and Sean Furst, co-presidents of Skybound Entertainment, and partners Robert Kirkman and David Alpert. Samantha Nisenboim, McKay's producing partner, will serve as executive producer. The movie's official summary is as follows: "In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula. Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency."
