Miss Nepal Faces Backlash Over Miss Universe 2023 Participation

In the 71-year legacy of Miss Universe, 2023 marks the historic debut of a plus-sized contestant. The 22-year-old representative from Nepal, Jane Dipika Garrett, has made history by boldly presenting her stunning physique on the global stage.
While a considerable number of people support her, praising her beauty, another significant portion of the global audience criticized her. In response, she candidly deals with these toxic comments, providing insight into her experiences.

Garrett expressed her confidence.

Jane Dipika Garrett shared her delight at the progress she made during the November 2023 competition. Dreaming of a modeling career, she faced past challenges with low self-esteem. The overwhelmingly positive response she received during the event was a validating experience, solidifying her newfound confidence in embracing her true identity.
Garret shared that she didn’t get much applause on the stage but she didn’t mind. Her purpose to participate in this competition was present to her country as well as women all over the world.

There was a difference of opinion.

While receiving widespread acclaim for her stunning appearance from admirers globally, the 22-year-old received harsh criticism. She openly admitted that some incoming messages were far from positive, even reaching the point of being described as “cruel.”
She revealed, “I see things like, ’Oh, she’s a whale,’ or ’Why don’t you go to the gym?’ And things like that.” She continued, “It’s like they don’t even know my story. They don’t even know what I’m going through.”

Despite her disease, she keeps a positive mindset.

The beauty contestant clarified that she deals with a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This medical condition involves the overproduction of androgens by the ovaries, exceeding the typical levels found in women. PCOS manifests with various effects, including weight gain, menstrual irregularities, acne, and excess hair growth.
She noted that she had gained a lot of weight due to her condition, expressing, “that’s also really taken a toll on my mental health and my self-esteem because I thought that I wasn’t good enough or that I wasn’t beautiful enough.’’
Nevertheless, Garrett embarked on a journey of cultivating a positive mindset and finding comfort in her own skin. Observing her radiant confidence on stage, it’s evident that she has successfully navigated this self-acceptance journey.
