Margot Robbie Gives New Update About Her Harley Quinn, Lady Gaga & More

With the latest release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the DCEU timeline is now officially over, and makes way for James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. While prominent characters such as Superman and Batman will get a complete recast, Gunn still keeps some actors from the DCEU, such as Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller and John Cena’s Peacemaker.
However, it’s still unclear if some other roles, such as Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn or Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, will be recast or not. Recently, Robbie, who portrays Harley Quinn in the DCEU, gave us some important updates about her future as the anti-heroine, and she even talked about Lady Gaga, who will play the character in the upcoming Joker: Folie a Deux. Let’s see what the actress had to say.

Speaking with Variety, the actress was asked if there was any chance for her to return as Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s new DC Universe now that Lady Gaga is playing the role in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie a Deux. In return, Robbie didn’t give a direct answer, but instead talked about how she’d love the character to be played by several different actresses.
“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless,” said Robbie.

It seems that Robbie is pretty open to the idea of other actresses playing the role instead of her, specifically Lady Gaga, who will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming Joker sequel. However, by this answer, the actress may also imply that she’s ready to step down from the role of Harley Quinn, and that James Gunn already has plans to give the role to someone else.

So far, there is no confirmation on James Gunn’s side about whether Margot Robbie will reprise her role or not. Having starred as the infamous Gotham criminal for nearly 8 years, Robbie’s stellar performance as Harley Quinn is widely praised by DC enthusiasts worldwide, and is one of the fan-favorite characters in the DCEU timeline,
Fans have also expressed their desire time and time again for James Gunn to keep Margot Robbie in his new DCU, but the Guardians of the Galaxy director hasn’t addressed the matter so far. There have been rumors about how Robbie is already negotiating with Gunn and Saffran for a potential DCU appearance, but it’s seemingly debunked by the actress’ earlier statement.

Margot Robbie first made her appearance as Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad in 2016. While the movie was heavily criticized by the public, Robbie’s brilliant performance as Quinn made her one of the movie’s few saving graces, and launched her name to Hollywood stardom. Robbie becomes an A-tier actress thanks to the role, and lands multiple big roles afterward as a result.
The Aussie performer continues to star as Harley Quinn in two other DCEU movies: Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2021), and keeps impressing the audience with her performances. However, as James Gunn takes over and reboots the entire DC Universe, Robbie’s future as Quinn remains in doubt.

While we’re still unsure if Margot Robbie will reprise the role or not, the character Harley Quinn herself can still play an integral part in the rebooted DC Universe. The first chapter of the franchise features Batman: The Brave and The Bold, which is the chance for multiple iconic Gotham villains, Joker and Harley Quinn included, to make their return.
However, she won’t have a big role in the movie, since it will revolve around Bruce, Damian Wayne, and possibly the Al Ghul clan.

Another DC-related show that Harley Quinn could be featured in is Matt Reeves’ Arkham series, which is possibly in the same universe as Robert Pattinson’s The Batman. The TV series could introduce Quinn as one of the major villains, who breaks out of Arkham Asylum. Her complicated backstory with Joker could also be included.
For a character of Harley Quinn’s caliber, no doubt she’ll have a place in James Gunn’s ambitious DC Universe. The only question is: will Margot Robbie, possibly the best Harley Quinn in live-action history, reprise the role? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
