If you walk in a forest, you’ll discover that you’re surrounded by a variety of species, ranging from birds to butterflies and snakes. It is quite similar to that if you own a flower garden like Allison Lamb in the story below.
Living in Snohomish, Washington with her Snohomish Lavender Farm, Allison realizes the first sign of spring thanks to the noisy sound of her special neighbors. “We know when spring has arrived when we can hear all the frogs begin to croak,” Lamb said.

When the winter snow starts to melt, it’s time for gorgeous flowers to blossom and frogs to thrive. The small guys seem to fall in love with Lamb’s garden and visit it every year. “I have some flowers that line my house, and they will climb up the walls,” Lamb said, “and they get up in my hanging flower baskets.”
However, one day, she spotted something totally unexpected. Allison was inspecting her flower farm when she suddenly caught sight of a frog resting on her dahlia. “I was delighted to find a frog sleeping in one of my dahlias,” Lamb said.

There were over 200 dahlias in the garden, and it turned out that besides providing pollen for bees, these beautiful floras were perfect shelters for frogs. “I kept seeing more and more as the summer progressed,” Lamb said. “Some days I could find over 10 different frogs taking shelter in my flowers.”
The amphibians have become a source of excitement and Entertainment for Lamb and her children. During the spring and summer, the family enjoys seeking the tiny guys snuggling in the flowers’ petals.

In fact, the frogs aren’t there just for fun. They act as the guards that protect the flower garden from pests and other enemies. “The frogs eat the bad bugs for me,” Lamb said. Their presence is essential for the flowers’ thrive.
The frogs are not the only inhabitants of Lamb’s farm. “The bees will sleep in my dahlias overnight, I find little spiders taking shelter as well, and last year I found little gardener snakes up in my flowers,” Lamb shared. “I also have several salamanders, a praying mantis, and, in the late summer, caterpillars are everywhere.”

That being said, frogs have a special meaning for Lamb. She likes to see them resting peacefully in the petals while poking their small, green heads out. She always misses them so much when the winter comes and they leave. “They stay in the flowers all season until the first frost comes and the flowers die,” Lamb said. Though it’s sad to say goodbye, Lamb knows these cute guys will return in the spring, and she hopes more guests will visit her flower hotel next year.
