Historical Reenactors Get Shocked to Discover Tiny Family in the Woods

Being a historical reenactor is an incredible experience in which individuals fully immerse themselves in past eras, recreating historical moments with authentic clothing, equipment, and activities. Throughout their reenactments, they often encounter intriguing situations. Recently, a group of historical reenactors encountered an unexpected turn in a Civil War-era scenario when they came across a distressed family animal in need of assistance.

In order to be prepared for a Civil War-era scenario, Michael Hammond and his fellow historical reenactors, along with The Tiger Light Guard, packed their usual belongings for a weekend in the woods. Little did they know that an unexpected discovery would leave them supply-less while desperately trying to save lives.

During picket duty on a Saturday morning, one of the soldiers returned with surprising news—he found a tiny, drenched kitten meowing sadly. It had rained heavily overnight, and the soldiers hadn't realized a little kitten was caught in the storm. With experience in animal rescues, some of the men knew what to do.

“We had just established picket duty Saturday morning... When one of the sergeants came walking back saying [that] one of the soldiers found a cat,” Hammond told The Dodo, an animal channel. “According to the soldier that found her, she was meowing very loudly, which caused him to go looking for her. The kitten was completely soaked and meowing very sadly.”

Without hesitation, the captain wrapped the shivering kitten in a dry blanket and placed her by the fire. The kitten calmed down, feeling the warmth. Then, to everyone's surprise, another soldier burst in, announcing they had found two more kittens. It became evident that these kittens must have been abandoned, as feral ones would have sought shelter.

After drying the kittens by the fire, the soldiers fed them some raw and dried meat, using whatever equipment they had as makeshift bowls. They even found a tin bowl, which the kittens flocked to for water. Once the kittens were fed and hydrated, the soldiers took turns watching over them during their scenario, ensuring they were safe.

Usually, nothing can tear the soldiers away from their events, but in this case, the captain broke the rules to get kitten food. The kittens slept in an ammunition box lined with a wool blanket during the night, and whenever the soldiers were in camp, the kittens were out, being affectionately handled.

The soldiers fell in love with the kittens, and when the weekend was over, they couldn't bear to part with them. While they debated asking if anyone in the civilian camp wanted a kitten, they finally decided to take them home. As a result, the first kitten found became the group's cherished mascot for their non-battle events.
