Henry Cavill Will No Longer Be Superman, James Gunn Plans To Reboot Superman

Henry Cavill's run as Superman is coming to an end, but James Gunn and Peter Safran hope you liked his appearance in Black Adam. Cavill joyfully informed his fans that he was returning as Superman back in October before Gunn and Safran had been brought on board to lead the charge at DC Studios. He hoped to continue playing the Man of Steel in films for some time to come. Fans are feeling optimistic that Man of Steel 2 will finally come thanks to his cameo in Black Adam, which was designed to tease more films starring Cavill.

Cavill's comeback to the Superman role is now ended, though, just as suddenly as he did so. Following a meeting that reportedly made this truth evident, both Gunn and Cavill made this public by sharing the news on social media. Cavill expressed his sorrow at the news in a message he shared on Instagram, but he also seemed appreciative of the "fun ride" he's had playing the part.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.
For those who have been by my side through the years..... we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember... Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

James Gunn has also addressed the subject with a post of his own on Twitter. He also makes mention of the conversation he had with Cavill and says they may still collaborate on future projects. Gunn also makes it clear that the idea is to reinvent Superman for the DC Universe again, with a younger actor playing the role.

"Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future."
Gunn confirmed in a subsequent tweet that he is writing the film's screenplay as well, albeit the director has not yet been decided. Although it follows a younger Superman, he also claims that it won't be an origin narrative. Maybe there will be more developments soon since that Gunn and Safran know what they want to accomplish with the Man of Steel.
