This Halloween, things were beginning to look a bit tad low-key with the Petito family.

With the kids growing older, the excitement of turning their home into a spooky spectacle had faded. Jennifer Petito, the mom of the house, explained, “Our house [was] not decorated for Halloween at all."

However, the spooky season spirit hadn’t run dry for everyone. The Halloween spirit was still very much alive in one family member: Bear, their lovable dog.

Mysterious Halloween decorations began popping up around Petito's front porch and yard—-things such as pumpkins, styrofoam tombstones, and ghost figurines.

No one suspected Bear. Given Bear's recent surgery and the cone he wore, he seemed like an unlikely person to blame for this clandestine Halloween decorating. Moreover, the backyard was fenced in, so there was no way Bear could escape.

The mystery became clear one night when the Petitos' doorbell camera alerted them to some activity outside. Jennifer Petito recounted, “When I opened the door, Bear was standing there, all proud, with a styrofoam tombstone, wagging his tail."

The truth was out: Bear was behind it all along. Bear had been digging a hole underneath the backyard fence, creating just enough space for him and his trusty cone to slip through.

Bear was the one who "borrowed" the decorations from the neighborhood.

Everything made sense and Petito eventually knew that Bear was the reason for all the strange decorations in their yard. She wanted to help him return all these things so she began sharing photos of the "stolen" decorations in a local chat group to find the real owners. Luckily, the neighbors didn’t seem to be mad at all.

She happily reported, “The neighbors have all been great so far. Everyone thinks it's funny."

In the end, Bear may have been caught red-pawed, but his unexpected Halloween crime spree transformed a potentially forgettable holiday into something truly memorable for the Petito family.

However, they’re hoping the crime spree ends there. Jennifer Petito mentioned, “We just had [a new fence] installed the other day. So, hopefully, everyone's Christmas decorations will be safe."
