Dog And Cat Abandoned By Their Family In Field Can't Live Without Each Other

Do you believe that close relationships can only exist between members of the same species? And is it difficult for one species to accept and empathize with another? We believe the answer is "no," as it’s obvious that no matter what species we are, compassion and love are traits that we all share. You have undoubtedly heard tales of people helping animals, and vice versa, innumerable times. Then, if that isn’t an honorable connection between species, then what is that?

Today, let’s join us and hear the story of Shadow and Sassy, a pair of abandoned pets, whose tale proves that love is real among different animals. These pets have such a strong bond that it makes them so famous and is admired by all the staff members of the rescue center.

Sassy and Shadow were discovered in a field by a Samaritan after their family left them. They had the option of breaking apart as soon as they were dropped because there were no barriers like walls or fences to prevent them from doing so. However, they remained by each other's sides and watched out for one another until assistance could arrive.

After getting rescued and moved to the Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS), these two animals have never spent a day apart. The 6-year-old dog Sassy and the 1-year-old cat Shadow's bond is unlike anything the rescue team has ever seen. They are the closest friends who won't be separated.

"This cat and dog were practically glued together," Lydia Sattler, JCAS’s animal services director, said. "It’s really rare to see that."

The good Samaritan saw that the dog hadn't fed in a while, so he went away for a moment before returning with some kibble and giving it to the puppy. He anticipated that she would eat the meal soon, but to his surprise, Sassy took an unexpected action.

"The dog let the cat eat first," Sattler said. "She sat right there while the kitty was eating out of the dish and waited for him to finish before she ate. It was so sweet."

The man called JCAS for assistance in capturing the two animals as he was feeding them. Sassy and Shadow didn't object when a group of rescuers showed up; instead, they joyfully entered the vehicle and settled into their usual positions.

"As soon as we put them in the back seat of the truck, the kitty curled right up with the dog," Sattler said.

The two siblings slept contently next to each other throughout the peaceful journey to JCAS. The rescue crew was aware that the pair couldn't be split up, but they were unaware of how challenging the arrangement would be until they arrived at the shelter.

"When they got here, we didn’t want to separate them, but we have a dog-specific room and a cat room," Sattler said, "There’s a large space for multiple cat housing that was available, though, so we decided to put them in that room so that they could stay together."

As they settled into life at the shelter, Sassy and Shadow made sure to never wander too far from each other.

"Everywhere the dog went, the cat was right there with her," Sattler shared. "They snuggled together every day. Every morning, our staff would walk in to see what cute thing they were doing. It was just so adorable."

Sassy and Shadow’s tight-knit bond left an impression on their friends at JCAS, who knew right away that the two needed to find a forever home together.

"Whatever they’ve gone through so far, they got through it together," Sattler said. "So, we knew that they needed to continue staying together."

For Sassy and Shadow's everlasting home, Sattler and her crew looked in all the right places. After being saved for just over a month, their dream was finally fulfilled.

"They ended up finding a great home where they get to continue that bond that they have," Sattler said. "They’re continuing to enjoy their time together, and they don’t have to worry about being hungry anymore."

Sattler frequently receives updates from Sassy and Shadow's new family, and she finds it heartwarming to see the two closest friends still standing by one another. One thing hasn't changed despite their exciting and adventurous lives: their unwavering love for one another.

The JCAS caretakers miss seeing Sassy and Shadow cuddle every day, but they are overjoyed to know that the adorable pair is exactly where they should be.

"They’re getting lots of love from their family," Sattler said. "And, now, they’re finally enjoying life."
