Despaired Fox Stuck In Tire Finally Gets Rescued And Released Back Home

One fine spring day in Shoreham, England, a frantic call came into the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Services (WRAS). The distressing news was about a helpless fox cub in a tight spot. It appeared that she had squeezed her head through a rusty wheel and was now struggling to set herself free.

“The young fox was found to have [her] head through the central hole in [a] metal wheel, which still had the [tire] attached,” East Sussex WRAS wrote in a Facebook post.

The WRAS team quickly contacted the Brighton Hove Wildlife Advice & Rescue Service for assistance. Both teams then rushed to the scene to rescue the fox cub from her predicament.

Upon arrival, they realized that the tire was firmly wrapped around the fox's neck. And to rescue her, they needed to transport her to one of their veterinary centers.

The team then gently carried the fox back to their van and safely brought her to the East Sussex WRAS Casualty Centre. There, they assessed the situation more closely.

The fox's face was visibly swollen, and she had a wound behind one ear from being stuck. The WRAS Care Team understood that this would be a challenging rescue. “WRAS’ Care Team knew this was not going to be easy …” East Sussex WRAS wrote.

The veterinary team then used a small dose of anesthesia to keep the fox calm during the procedure. They moved the fox's head slowly and carefully, bending her ears to free her from the tire.

After a coordinated and gentle effort, they successfully set the fox free from the tire. Although she had some lingering wounds from the ordeal, her spirits were high. “The fox herself was certainly feeling much better,” East Sussex WRAS wrote.

The fox cub needed time to heal, and the East Sussex WRAS team was in no rush to see her off. She stayed with her newfound rescuer friends until she made a full recovery and was ready to return to her natural habitat.

Now free from the tire's grasp, the little fox is undoubtedly living her best life in the woods once more. She can explore the bushes and enjoy a refreshing dip in the water. But one thing is certain: She won't be investigating the curious center of a rusty wheel again.
