DC Just Announced A New Suicide Squad Anime Series, And It’s Looking Awesome
Animated movies and series are not an unfamiliar concept to DC fans, as there are already plenty of good cartoons about DC Comics, which include some classic masterpieces such as Superman: Doomsday, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans, or Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. Not only this is a great way to test out whether the original story will do well on the big screen before making it into a live-action adaptation, but DC animated movies also get to attract a new chunk of fans who aren’t comic book readers.
To attract an even wider audience, some of DC’s animation is even done in anime style to tempt its vast fanbase, with the most recent success being Batman Ninja and Deadshot. And, quite recently, the comic behemoth has officially announced a new DC anime coming to the scene, which is named Suicide Squad Isekai. As the name suggests, the story of the upcoming film will revolve around the infamous vigilante group, featuring its two most iconic characters: The Joker and Harley Quinn. Here’s what we know about the new DC anime, so let’s dive into it.
#1. About the Isekai genre in anime.
Isekai, also known as Re-incarnation, is a popular genre in anime, in which the main character gets transported from their world to a new one, which often results in a fantasy or sci-fi land, where they have to use their current-world knowledge to survive. In these types of movies, the character often receives a huge boost in powers and charisma, which helps them defeat bad guys and gain more allies along the way.
Starts popping up in the mid-2010s, and the Isekai genre quickly becomes a huge trend in the anime industry, and is still going strong these days. Countless Isekai anime have been made during the process and they’re widely received by worldwide fans, with the most notable masterpieces being That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Re: Zero, The Rise of The Shield Hero, and Jobless Reincarnation. And, Suicide Squad Isekai is about to join this huge roster of anime genre.
#2. What we know about Suicide Squad Isekai.
Suicide Squad Isekai’s announcement trailer was released earlier today, as a collaboration project between DC with Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio, which is behind popular anime projects such as Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga. The series is directed by Eri Osada, who was in charge of the 2020 sensation Jujutsu Kaisen. The project also features other big names as Tappei Nagatsuki (Re: Zero) and Akira Amano (Hitman: Reborn).
As the name suggests, the new animated series will bring the notorious team of misfits in the DC Universe to a brand-new fantasy land, which consists of various floating islands and magical creatures such as dragons and goblins. The announcement trailer features two of the most iconic villains in both the Suicide Squad and DC as a whole: The Joker and his lover, Harley Quinn.
#3. Which DC characters are in the series?
So far, there are only three original DC lineups revealed in the original trailer: The Joker and Harley Quinn as two leading members, and Amanda “The Wall” Waller, the director of the Suicide Squad. The other members are not presented yet, however, we can expect iconic characters of the team like Deadshot or King Shark to make their entrance in the final product.
So far, Harley Quinn’s new design in the anime has been very well-received by fans all around the world, which has the villainess redrawn in cute anime style, but still retains her craziness and unhinged personality in the comics. The Joker, who also has a total revamp in terms of appearance, looks much younger than his comic and movie counterparts.
#4. Is Suicide Squad Isekai canon?
While featuring some of the titular members of the group, it’s quite certain that Suicide Squad Isekai will serve as a spinoff rather than a serious addition to James Gunn’s new DCEU. According to George Wada, WIT Studio’s head, it seems like both Gunn and Safran aren’t involved in the anime project.
However, even if the animated series is non-canon, we’re still guaranteed a fun and bonkers ride with Suicide Squad Isekai, as the initial trailer has received positive reactions overall from fans across the globe.
#5. What is the series’ release date?
While announcing the teaser trailer, both DC and WIT Studio haven’t revealed the exact release date of the TV series yet, but we can expect it to premiere in 2024 or early 2025. No further information about the film’s plot is disclosed, either, but since the anime is likely to take place in a whole different world (which is quite equivalent to DCEU’s Multiverse), the Suicide Squad might have to face a brand-new formidable enemy, or the fantasy medieval version of the Justice League. Anything could be possible at this point.
