Brave 13-Year-Old Risks All to Rescue Little Brother from Treacherous Waves

In a heartwarming display of courage and sibling love, a 13-year-old boy's selfless act has captured the world's attention. Kalya Kandegoda Gamage, along with his younger brother Kithme and their mother, were newcomers to New Zealand last August. Little did they know that a seemingly innocent trip to Chrystalls Beach would lead to a daring rescue that would forever define Kalya as a true hero.

On that fateful day, while they were playing at the water's edge, an unforeseen menace emerged from the waves. A massive swell swept 11-year-old Kithme away, leaving him in dire need of help. Without a second thought, Kalya sprang into action. The urgency of the situation was clear, and he recognized that he was the only hope for his little brother's safety.

With unwavering determination, Kalya ventured into the treacherous waters, swimming nearly 196 feet to reach his imperiled brother. “I told my mother, ‘Okay, I’m going to get my brother but I might not be back,'” Kalya recounted, underlining the gravity of his selfless decision.

Facing the formidable challenge of the rough sea, the young teen remarkably described the experience as manageable due to the waves themselves. Stripping off his jacket and shoes, he plunged into the water, using the waves to his advantage as he reached Kithme. “He tried to grab me, then I pushed him, then I told him to grab my shoulders and my shirt. So we went to the shore safely,” Kalya recounted, his voice resonating with the simplicity and determination of a true hero.

Kalya's bravery did not go unnoticed. The Royal Life Saving Society, a prominent drowning prevention charity in the UK, recognized his remarkable feat and bestowed upon him the prestigious Mountbatten Medal. This esteemed award is reserved for individuals within the Commonwealth who exhibit extraordinary courage during daring rescue attempts. Kalya's courage, making him one of only three Sri Lankans to receive this honor, shines as a testament to his exceptional valor.

His own school, Tokomairiro High School, played a vital role in the accolade's presentation. Kept as a surprise, Kalya's principal, Declan Sheridan, described the emotional moment of recognition. "He knew something was happening because he was sat in the front row. And then all of a sudden he got this, this fantastic medal, and there were 40 invited guests there as well."

Kalya's humility and genuine character have left an indelible mark on those around him. His school principal praised him, stating, "He’s very modest as well… The word hero comes to the tongue really easily. He’s worthy of that title. He’s a wonderful young man." Kalya's actions have not only made him a hero but have also reinforced the core values of his school community.

Amid all the recognition and applause, Kalya's biggest fan remains his mother. "She’s proud of me," Kalya expressed with heartfelt simplicity. "She was so happy because she thought Kithme might not be back – so I just bring him back, so she was, she was so happy."

In a world that often seeks out inspiring stories, Kalya's remarkable act of bravery and love has captivated hearts across the globe. His courage in the face of danger, his unwavering determination to save his brother, and his genuine humility embody the spirit of a true hero.
