The top eight seeds in the men's singles draw at the 2023 Australian Open, set to begin in Melbourne on January 16, will include Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Due to an unexpected injury suffered by World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz during training, the field at the tournament will be headlined by the defending champion and World No. 2, Rafael Nadal. Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas will be the next two seeds, and Novak Djokovic, a nine-time champion and currently ranked fifth in the world, will be the fourth seed.

Completing the top eight seeds for the tournament will be Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev who reached the final in 2022 and Taylor Fritz. Besides Nadal who has won the tournament twice, Djokovic who won nine times, and Medvedev who reached the final twice, none of the other five top-eight seeds have ever reached the final at Melbourne Park.

The third seed, Tsitsipas, has made it to the semifinals three times, twice in the last two years. While the second seed, Ruud, has never advanced past the fourth round in his three appearances at the tournament. The fifth seed, Rublev, achieved the quarterfinals in 2021, while the sixth seed, Auger-Aliassime, reached the same stage last year. The eighth seed, Fritz, made it to the fourth round last year.

At the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the two active players with the most tournament wins.

Nadal has a record of 76 wins and 15 losses at Melbourne Park, He reached the final six times and won twice, Djokovic, on the other hand, has an 82-8 record at the first Grand Slam of the year, he has won all nine finals, including two against Nadal (2012, 2019).

Despite their success at the Australian Open, Nadal and Djokovic have had different results leading up to the 2023 tournament. Nadal has suffered consecutive defeats for the first time in his career at the start of the season, while Djokovic has yet to lose a set in four matches. Djokovic will play Sebastian Korda in the Adelaide 1 final today, aiming for his 92nd career singles title.

While Nadal has struggled recently, he was defeated by Cameron Norrie of Great Britain and Alex de Minaur of Australia in the United Cup, where Spain was eliminated before the semi-final. Nadal has now lost 5 of his 6 singles matches since the birth of his first child Rafael Nadal Jr. in October.

Djokovic, Ruud, and Tsitsipas are the three players who have the opportunity to leave the Australian Open as World No.1. Djokovic and Tsitsipas must win the tournament to achieve this, while Ruud must make it to the final and hope that Djokovic and Tsitsipas don't.

Interestingly, Nadal is not in the race for the World No. 1 ranking as he is 800 points behind Alcaraz, and Alcaraz only dropped 90 points after making the third round last year. Even if Nadal successfully defended his title, he would be 710 points behind Alcaraz, and Alcaraz would still hold the World No. 1 ranking if Ruud doesn't reach the final.

On the other hand, if Djokovic wins the tournament, he will match Nadal's record of 22 Grand Slam titles, and will be tied for the most Grand Slam titles of all time.
