Animal Shelter's Staff Hear Doorbell Ring At 1:30 AM And See A Familiar Face

Though dogs have been the best companions of humans throughout history, we still find it hard to fully understand their extraordinary ability. The only thing we can be sure about is that apart from being loyal and lovable, they are also more clever than we may think.
Let’s meet Bailey, the smart dog who overcame a 10-mile journey to the place she’d been attached to for years.

Bailey was a resident at the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, Texas for a long time. Her delightful disposition stole the hearts of staff and volunteers, but it took a long time to find her a forever home.
Recently, she finally moved into a new home with a new family. Unfortunately, during the test for a new harness, Bailey was frightened by something and ran from her owner. Her dad failed to catch up with her, so she ended up being lost.

“She got out of his sight,” Loretta Hyde, founder of the Animal Rescue League, shared. “He let us know that Bailey was loose, so we asked for people to be on the lookout.”

Everyone was worried about Bailey, but it turned out that she was clever enough to rescue herself. After checking reports of Bailey's sightings for several days, they realized that she was getting closer and closer to the shelter, which was 10 miles away from the place she'd disappeared. “For whatever reason, it felt to me that she was on her way here,” Hyde said. “I said, ‘She’s coming back to the shelter.’”

Just as Hyde guessed, Bailey was coming to the center! One day, at around 1:30 a.m. an alert from the shelter’s doorbell camera showed up on staff’s phones. There was someone standing outside the door.
“[Our staffer] looked and thought, ‘Is that Bailey?’” Hyde said. “You can talk through the doorbell camera, so she hollered, ‘Bailey?’ Then the dog looked at the camera, like, ‘Yeah, it’s me! Let me in!’”

The staff member drove to the shelter in no time and saw Bailey waiting there. Despite the 10-mile distance, this smart dog had managed to get through tough days and reached the right place. “She knew exactly where to go,” Hyde said. “Dogs are smarter than we give them credit for.”

Bailey was then showered with love from his old caregivers at the shelter. The exhausted dog was provided food, water, and a warm bed to take a good rest. “She ate a big bowl and slept all morning,” Hyde notifies.

According to Hyde, Bailey gets on well with his dad, and they are a great fit. Her father had never stopped tracking her down while she went missing. Finally, Bailey is back in her sweet home in her dad's embrace. “That morning, we called him to say we had Bailey,” Hyde added. “He hurried over as soon as he could.”

This incident has proved that wherever Bailey is, the shelter always holds a big position in her heart. The experience must be an unforgettable memory for all staff members at the shelter. “They’re welcome to come visit anytime. Bailey’s dad appreciates us, and we appreciate him,” Hyde said. “They will be back to visit. I know they will.”
