Learn More About The True Nature Of Spider From Avatar: The Way of Water

James Ramsey

The eagerly anticipated sequel to Avatar (2009) debuted with a bang and offered a number of new characters to its viewers. Fans of the film eagerly anticipated the arrival of Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out over 14 years after the original. The family that Jake and Neytiri now have includes Neteyam, who is the oldest, Lo'ak, who is the second son, Kiri, who is the oldest daughter they adopted, Tuk, who is the youngest daughter, and Spider. From the very beginning of the film, Jake is narrating and tells the audience what's been happening in the time that has passed.
Spider is a human that the Sully family practically adopted as their own. Jake adopted Spider as one of his children, while Neytiri does not, preferring to keep Spider at a distance. Because of what he adds to the film and the problems that follow him, Spider is one of the most contentious characters that was added to this sequel. Let's examine his character holistically rather than just what is visible on the surface.

Audiences learn that Colonel Miles Quaritch is alive at the beginning of the film, which is strange considering how much he despises Avatars. Quaritch is still alive, and while he lacks certain memories, he does recall that he wants Jake Sully and Neytiri to bear the consequences of their treason. We also learn that Quaritch, who was abandoned on Pandora as a newborn, is the father of Spider, the Sully family's stray-cat kid. The identity of Spider's biological mother is not revealed in the movie, although according to the comics, she was a pilot by the name of Paz Socorro who perished in the conflict shown in the first film.
Quaritch immediately asserts that they are unrelated to one another because of the Avatar body he is now inhabiting after learning that Spider is alive. But it is swiftly put to rest as Quaritch adopts a protective attitude toward his son, halting the torture the general is inflicting on him, and subsequently saving his life. Because of how terrible Quaritch is, it's difficult to enjoy their times together, but it's understandable why Spider would feel conflicted about seeing his father again.

Although Spider was a member of the family, Neytiri never truly acknowledged him as her son, according to Jake's narration at the opening of the film. Neytiri's reluctance toward Spider is understandable given that it is obvious that she has reservations about sky-people existing on Pandora, particularly in light of the fact that her father was murdered by one. Spider begins to feel increasingly uncomfortable with Neytiri's hate of humanity as the film goes on as spends more time with Quaritch. Unlike Neytiri, who doesn't love or treat Spider like the rest of them, Jake may have welcomed Spider without hesitation.
Neytiri shuts down her emotions and transforms into a ferocious animal after Jake and Neytiri's oldest son, Neteyam, are shot and murdered by Quaritch's troops. The best way to describe what happens when he passes away is Jake encouraging her to keep a strong heart and resist breaking down and grieving right then. So she loses consciousness and obliterates every last soldier still aboard the boat, taking no survivors with her. Spider watches everything happen, appearing terrified and frightened as he hides to avoid being seen by her.
When Kiri is taken hostage by Quaritch, Neytiri seizes Spider and does the same thing, threatening to murder Quaritch until he releases her daughter. Everyone realizes at that point that Neytiri isn't playing a joke, especially after she says, "A son for a son."

Even though Quaritch claims he has no animosity against this horrific person-turned-Avatar, Spider struggles with this reality throughout the whole film. In addition to physically setting scores of homes on fire, Spider despises the fact that he is so bad. Quaritch's primary objective is to kill Jake Sully. Even after Neteyam's passing, Jake was more open to Spider, which says a lot. It's exciting to watch as they fight it out until it comes to the decisive battle and Quaritch declares that he won't stop until he kills Jake and the rest of the family.
Although Jake prevails, he ends up in the water again throughout the course of the movie, prompting his boys to look for him. The audience is shocked by Quaritch's reaction when Spider notices him. It seems sensible that he would feel the urge to protect him given that Quaritch previously rescued him from Neytiri in addition to the fact that he is his father. Even after Spider swims back to the Sully family after bringing Quaritch to dry ground, many people still find it hard to believe that he betrayed them. It would be fascinating to watch how that will play out in the next Avatar. He doesn't make any attempt to inform his family of what he has done, most likely because Neytiri wouldn't spare him.
