Stepping into the second week after its international release, however, The Marvels doesn’t seem to do that much better from the first. The latest MCU installment only earns $65 million domestically, and $161 million worldwide after two weekends. This is reportedly even worse than Morbius, which is deemed the worst Marvel movie of all time.
Since The Marvels’ budget is around $270 million in total, the movie still has a long way to go to earn back the expense. To actually make a profit, it will need to earn around $400 million worldwide, a task seemingly impossible at this point.
With The Marvels’ under scrutiny, people are waiting to find out what’s the actors’ reactions to the movie’s box office performance. However, when asked about the matter, Iman Vellani gave out the most mature response possible, making fans respect the 21-year-old even more.
#1. “It Has Nothing To Do With Me,” Said Vellani
“It's genuinely a good time watching this movie, and that's all we can ask for with these films. It has superheroes, it takes place in space, it's not that deep and it's about teamwork and sisterhood. It's a fun movie, and I'm just so happy that I can share it with people.” She added.
#2. Vellani’s Response Is Deemed Mature For Her Age
Iman Vellani’s unexpectedly mature response impressed the Marvel community and neutral audience. Instead of blaming the movie’s underperformance on fans or other factors, she’s fully aware that The Marvels is a superhero movie, and it’s best to focus on the fun and character's dynamic aspects more than its overall plot.
Vellani’s answer, so far has been widely praised by the fandom, as it shows the actress’s incredible maturity for someone so young. And it’s Bob Iger and Nia DaCosta’s responsibility to improve the movie’s box office performance, not the actors.
Besides, Vellani’s display in The Marvels is anything but appalling. She’s easily one of the best aspects of the movie, a glue substance that holds everything intact.
#3. What Are The Causes Of The Marvels’ Underperformance?
It’s still too soon to say if The Marvels is a box office bomb or not, but as things are now, it’s still a long way to go for the movie to meet fans’ expectations. However, the MCU installment’s underperformance was predicted months before it was released, due to inevitable reasons.
Due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike at the time, The Marvels’ stars like Vellani, Brie Larson, and Teyonah Parris weren’t able to promote the movie. The lack of marketing campaigns for the movie contributed greatly to its slow start at the box office.
The Marvels’ early negative reviews didn’t help, either, with most criticisms pointing toward its one-off villain, and overall plot,..The first movie, Captain Marvel (2019), also received mixed reviews upon release despite being a box office success, is another factor why people are reluctant to go see the sequel.
Do you think of Iman Vellani’s response regarding the movie? Will The Marvels’ box office performance improve in the upcoming weeks? Let us know what you think in the comments.
