Woman Asks If It's OK Not To Give The Cat She Found Back To Its Owner, Redditors Claims She's Doing Right

If a pet is missing, its owner will be very worried, and will immediately be starting a search. They'll seek help from as many people as possible, and will be grateful for the person who finds them the lost pet. But, what if the owner doesn't want their pet back right away? And what if the person who finds the pet doesn't want to return it?
That was the story of Redditor @Puzzled-Account-9079, her current cat, and its previous owner. The story was shared on the r/AITA community, where OP (original poster) received 2.8K upvotes and hundreds of comments.
OP spotted a cat near her area a year ago. It didn't seem to be a stray because it wasn't feral at all. After successful attempts on Facebook and at shelters to find its owner, OP decided the cat she found would stay with her forever.
A few days ago, she got a message from a strange woman who claimed to be the cat's owner explaining how she saw her Facebook post but couldn't receive the cat due to some problems with her finance and her relationship. Now, she wanted the cat back after she had solved her problems.
OP, of course, refused to give her the cat saying that she had no chance to claim it now because she had abandoned it. OP had been raising it for over a year, which meant it belonged to her for such long and in the future.
No matter how hard the woman tried to beg her, OP stood firm in her opinion that she wouldn't give the animal back. Do you think she was wrong?

The post got the attention of many netizens, who decided to join the discussion and decide that OP was absolutely not an a**hole. Here are some of their reactions.

#1 If OP gave the cat back, would the woman pay her for the cat's food and vet bills?

#2 She should have contacted OP a year ago when she saw the Facebook post!

#3 How do we know the woman is really the cat's owner? Some Redditors advised OP to block her.

#4 Returning the cat is cruel to it.

#5 The woman is absolutely TA!

#6 Pets are not toys

#7 If she loved her cat but couldn't afford it, she should have taken it somewhere safe instead of abandoning it.
