The Thoiry ZooSafari is a French zoological park located in the Île-de-France region. Opened in 1968, it now houses over 750 animals, representing 46 species of mammals, 26 species of birds, and 9 species of reptiles. Here is also the home for many amphibian and invertebrate species.
In 2016, a pair of Anoas arrived at Thoiry ZooSafari, and recently, the zoo has gladly announced the birth of the second calf of this pair.

Anoa, also known as dwarf buffalo, is endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. There are two species of anoa: the lowland anoa and the mountain anoa. The lowland anoa is among the smallest cattle, with an adult averaging 90 cm in height, while a calf is barely 40 cm at birth. Both males and females have a triangular horn cross-section and they always have white marking on the face and legs.

The mountain anoa is even smaller than its relative and is the smallest wild cattle species in the world. This animal reaches the height of 70 cm for an adult. The mountain anoas have longer, woolier hair that molts every year. Their coat shows faint spots on the head, neck, and limbs. They also have a round horn cross-section instead of triangular as distinguishing features with lowland anoas.
The number of anoas presenting in the European continent is extremely low. Even in captivity, there're no more than 50 individuals of this species, and there have only been 2 births during the last 12 months. Therefore, the birth of a young calf like the one at Thoiry ZooSafari is a rare occasion.
