The 25-year-old supermodel, Bella Hadid grabbed attention as she left the house wearing nothing but a nude thong. She was standing on a lit pedestal as two guys began sewing a snow-white dress directly onto her body. Hadid was painted with a fabric that had been sprayed on. It is applied with tools like 3D printing, industrial sprayers, and aerosol technology.
In about 9 minutes, Bella’s body was engulfed in a light layer of white fabric. Coperni’s Head of Design Charlotte Raymond shaped the dress into its final form.
“I was so nervous,” Bella said backstage, as it would have been her first experience being sprayed. But she didn’t let it show. She was steely and delicate, occasionally raising her arms above her head with an elegant flair, or offering a little smile at the people working on her. “I kind of just became the character, whoever she is.”

The Founder and Managing Director of Fabrican Ltd,  Doctor Manel Torres said that they create a wearable, non-woven textile using a spray-on fabric. It can be manufactured from a variety of fibers, ranging from natural to synthetic, such as wool, cotton, nylon, cellulose, and carbon nanofibers. Doctor Torres has been working on this multifunctional piece of technology at the London Bioscience Innovation Center in London since 2003.
“It can be used to make innovative clothes that can be washed, re-worn, and even integrated with diagnostic devices that can monitor the health of the wearer. The technology consists of short fibers bound together with polymers and biopolymers, and greener solvents that deliver the fabric in liquid form, then evaporate when the spray reaches a surface,” says Coperni.
“The texture of the fabric can be changed according to the fibers (synthetic and natural, such as cotton, linen, polyester or nylon as well as recycled) and binder used, and how the spray is applied,” it adds.

Originally, the spray-on dress started with a can of silly string. “I thought I could create a mist,” mentions Torres in a 2013 TED Talk. “That was the eureka moment,” he adds. The technology can be used in fashion to not only create dresses like those done on Hadid but also to repair any damaged items.
Fabrican looks to bring the technology into the medical arena too in making casts or spray-on sterile bandages from aerosol cans.

The future has arrived! Imagine this: you wake up in the morning and don't have to think about what you'll be wearing! Simply choose a bottle from the shelf and spray your clothing!
Well, maybe the future isn’t that close just yet, but that dress has made headlines, going viral nearly as quickly as the spray-on fabric settled onto her skin.
No one could deny that Bella looked beautiful, but the concerns that arose after the event stayed: how was this feasible; is this sustainable; how would this have looked on someone with a less-than-modelesque body? Although all of these inquiries are valid, let us focus on the first—the science behind the viral white dress!
Such an innovative invention, it’ll be interesting to see how far this technology can go.
