Touching Moment Elephant Hangs Trunk Out To Daughter And Granddaughters In Reunion After 12 Years Apart

In the wife, elephants often live in herds, and the male individuals will leave to find a partner when they are sexually mature, while the female stay with their mother for life. Therefore, some animal centers try to maintain families of elephants to ensure the animals’ well-being.
Lately, Pori, a 39-year-old elephant, had a touching reunion with her 19-year-old daughter Tanan and her granddaughters, Tamika and Elani.

Pori, an African elephant, was born in Zimbabwe in 1981. She was brought to the Magdeburg Zoo, Germany, where she lived from 1983 to 1997 before being sent to the Tierpark, Berlin, for breeding purposes. In 2001, she had her first calf Tana.

After 12 years of separation, Pori was reunited with her beloved family at Halle zoo. This reunion is a part of the plan to recreate a natural environment of herds for captivated animals. The elephant population in zoos will be tracked according to EEP, a conservation breeding program.

Staff in the center closed the elephant house to give the animals private space to reacquaint with each other. Everyone’s heart melted when they saw the elephants reach out their trunks to touch their loved family members.

The animals also had a chance to interact with each other outside, and visitors could watch them from a safe distance.
The Zoo director, Dr. Dennis Muller, shared: "Pori’s arrival in Halle is an important step in modern elephant husbandry. In the future, all elephant herds in European zoos should be cared for in such natural family structures. Today we have come a great deal closer to this goal."
