To do that, dogs need to get used to the schedule and understand that they won't be going outside to use the restroom for a while. Dogs are very schedule-oriented, so you don't need a dog sitter as long as you treat your dog well before and after spending a lot of time away from home.
Others are wondering since some dogs have issues and can't manage to be alone for a long time, the answer will differ from dog to dog. No dog would likely choose to spend so much time alone. They all probably prefer interacting with people or perhaps another dog. But they also don't believe that leaving them alone for eight hours will cause the end of the world. Great if you can afford to pay a pet sitter to come over in the middle of the day to allow your dog out for a short while.
