Don’t you think an actual fan of comics will never negate the artists’ amazing creativity whatever types of comics are? Certainly! Many comics made on paper and on digital devices were even adapted to films and went storming across the nations. If you’re using the Internet for online comic strips yet keep passing every website that recommends the “Off the Mark” made by Mark Parisi, you have just missed one of the best-animated works of a lifetime! Curious yet? Let’s together explore this masterpiece as well as its own father’s journey of doing arts!
Mark Parisi is a 59-year-old cartoonist who was born in New England. He’s always wanted to make cartoons ever since he could hold a crayon. Comics Mark found from Charles Schulz, Gary Larson and MAD magazine were his best inspirations of doing cartoons. For now, he is easily inspired by everything, from pets to pop culture to pandemics. At Salem State University, he used to change his major for quite many times before choosing Art, specifically Graphic Art.
Mark Parisi’ very first brainchild, Off the Mask, began in 1987. It now appears in over 100 newspapers, besides magazines, on greeting cards, T-shirts and more. The series tells us about good-hearted humor, visual gags, and jokes that relate to our witty lives. What makes them so attractive comes from Mark’s simple yet memorable drawing style limited in one to two panels, which differs from other cartoonists’ four-panel works. In 2008, 2011, and 2017, the artist won from the National Cartoonists Society as the owner of the “Best Newspaper Panel” award for “Off the Mark” and the “Best Greeting Cards” award in 2013.
Mark Parisi truly paid a special thanks to Paul Newman, ‘Weird AI’ Yankovic, and the Dixie Chicks who used his comics in their projects. Currently, he’s working on other projects that are official Garbage Pail Kids sketch cards and a middle-grade novel, The Truth About 5th Grade, with writer Kim Tomsic. “Keeps me busy and I think being busy is important right about now.”
