A 20 year history of Spider Man movies on big screen

Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s most popular superheroes. Before the release of Iron Man in 2008 which later led to the growth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider Man movies had already captured the love of fans all over the world. In this article, we will take a thorough look on how Spidey has been demonstrated in his first to his latest movie.

Tobey Maguire as the first Spider-Man on big screen
Spider-Man is the first Marvel franchise that found its place in pop culture. Marvel Comics has been known for publishing comic books which include different superheroes and villains. During its downfall in the early 2000s, Marvel had sold Spider-Man copyrights for Sony Pictures. At that time, Marvel had more to offer but Sony only found Spider-Man worth the deal.
Following that, Sony Pictures released Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire in 2002. The film was a huge success and earned around $ 825 millions though its budget was roughly $ 139 millions. Sony took the chance and made 2 other top box office sequels: Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007, forming one of the most iconic trilogy about Spider-Man.

Andrew Garfied and Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man
In 2012, Columbia Pictures together with Marvel Entertainment filmed the spinoff Spider-Man trilogy named The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfied. In this movie, they tell a different story with different villains other than ones who made their debut in the previous three movies. Critically, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are not seen as legendary as Tobey’s trilogy, they were still hit movies in theaters thanks to Spider-Man’s huge impact in the superheroes category.
In 2016, Spider-Man made his debut in the MCU with his appearance in Captain America 3: Civil War, presenting a completely new Spider-Man with teenage star Tom Holland. In the latest Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), 3 Spider-Mans got chances to crossover in the multiverse - what MCU movies of phase 4 are all about. For the very first time, three Spider-Mans stars Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfied and Tom Holland shock the audience with their collaboration. Moreover, this movie also includes villains from the Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2, making it one of the best experiences for fans and audience at the theaters.

Tom Holland on the set
Tom Holland starred in Marvel’s trilogy. This includes Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). He also made his pre-debut appearance in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers' fight over Thanos in Avengers 3: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers 4: Endgame (2019).
No Way Home is probably the last movie of Peter Parker in the MCU since Sony has taken its copyrights back on producing Spider-Man related movies, TV series and other products. Fortunately, Marvel has announced that the release of a special cut on No Way Home will be in theaters shortly. We may once again see Tom Holland as Spider-Man before saying goodbye to his journey in the MCU.
For 20 years, Spider-Man has been an inspiration for kids and adults all over the world. Filmmakers and studios will always continuously make more and more movies about this legendary superhero.
