Because commissioning a painting was so expensive, people of status have historically dominated pictures in addition to having a higher social position. But today, several quick and less costly techniques exist to immortalize one's likeness, rendering portrait paintings primarily superfluous. Similar to the medium, the subjects of portraits have also evolved. Royalty and nobility are no longer as important as they once were, and they have gradually been replaced by a more contemporary form of status figures: celebrities.
By replacing historical figures with current pop culture figures, Instagram artist Kyès digitally recreates classical paintings. The artist depicts some of the world's most well-known personalities in these paintings. Superstars like Madonna, Rihanna, Billie Eilish, and Mick Jagger are shown in iconic images, and it might be claimed that they are considerably more well-known than the nobility.
But Kyès doesn't only concentrate on them. Talented and rising rappers, actors, and hip-hop musicians are included in some of these portraits.
