Traditionally, a godparent is someone who is chosen from the congregation and makes a commitment to assisting in the spiritual development of their godchild from the time of their baptism. But families don't have to be religious or even spiritual to select godparents for their children. Nowadays, parents pick their relatives or anyone who is close to them as their children’s godparents.
For many people, being a godparent might signify different things. It could be a role with strong spiritual growth, a display of adoration for the child, or serving as a godchild's tutor.
