After their divorce, his ex-wife planned to move away so he was in charge of their cat, Burrito. Before leaving all the past behind, she wished to meet and say her last goodbye to the pet.

The OP found it hurtful to overcome the segregation. He finally managed to stop reminiscing about his ex-wife and decided to move on with Burrito by his side. He didn't want her appearance to penetrate their contemporary peace thus he rejected her. He supposed he was doing the best thing for the cat because he couldn't bear seeing that poor furball waiting for her at the doorway.

Reddit opinions could be divided into two opposite sides: offense and defense. People who disagreed with the OP expected all the mentioned worries were just a poor excuse for his weakness after a heartbreaking incident. If he wished to show compassion and mental strength, he should let her see their have-raised-together cat for the last time. They even pointed out that he wasn't innocent and had been the cause of the divorce. Therefore he should stop acting childish and avoiding.

On the opposite side, people assumed the cat was the OP's possession hence he had the full right to refuse his ex-wife. His decision might not be heartful, plus, his explanation might be unconvincing, but it suited his case. At least he acceptably made himself feel better. Burrito was his own cat and would be completely fine with whatever the OP determined. In addition, they supposed if Burrito had thoughts and emotions, he would not and should not meet his traumatizing ex-owner again.
