Dad Gets Criticized For Lying To His Daughter, But Reddit Is Rallying Around Him

Lying to your kids sounds harsh, but in some cases, it's necessary to do it. Like this father (OP) who goes by the name u/throwaway1244987125 on Reddit lied to his daughter and their dead dog's collar. His wife flipped out on him and criticized him for doing this, but Redditors supported him and called his wife out on her weird reaction.
In the popular subreddit r/AmItheAsshole, the guilty father shared the details of the story. Everything started when their beloved dog Daily passed away. The family members were devastated by her death, especially their daughter. She wanted to make a shrine for Daisy in her room by taking the dog's possessions and placing them as part of her memorial. The dad gave her everything, except her first collar. He wanted to keep it for himself, so he lied to her and hid it from her.

OP wrote: "My (35M) dog, daisy (15F) just died. Daisy was my dog before I met my wife (34F) and before we had our daughter (8F). My daughter has taken daisy’s death really hard, and has made a shrine for daisy in her room. To make the shrine, she has taken every one of daisy’s possessions (toys, collars, etc) and placed them as part of her memorial. She asked me and my wife for everything of daisy‘s that we have so that she could use them as part of her memorial. We gave her just about everything but there’s one thing I kept for myself: daisy’s first collar."
The dad shared that the collar was from when Daisy was a puppy. He knew he was selfish but he couldn't give it for his daughter. He then explained the reason why he did that. He continued, "Back then I was in a really dark place and Daisy was the only reason I got out of bed most days. She completely saved my life and I’ve kept that collar over the years as a reminder to myself that the darkest days don’t last and that a little bit of kindness and love can change someone’s life for the better. I know this makes me a terrible father, but I haven’t told my daughter about the collar and I didn’t plan to."

However, he couldn't hide it forever. His wife found it and went mad at him. She called him out and said that he was an awful dad. She wanted him to confess to their daughter and give her the collar if not she would tell her the truth.
The dad knew he was wrong but he didn't want to give the collar up. But no matter how much he loves it, his wife still tells their daughter the truth. He has no choice but to talk to his daughter and explain this to her.
Almost Redditors side with the OP and point out his wife's reaction is super weird. They don't understand her angle at all because their daughter doesn’t even need to know about the collar.
