Just a second. Many people will claim that a photograph may be deceitful, and I'll agree that if it has been manipulated. If not, it offers a single frozen instance of reality. Our need to understand a photo—again, unaltered—leads us to believe that it is a deception. Our minds begin to conjure up a narrative to explain what our eyes are seeing when we encounter a single image of, say, a woman crying on her cheeks while waiting at a railway station. Perhaps someone notices a woman sobbing after saying goodbye to a loved one. Someone other could see a woman sobbing with happiness as she prepares to reconcile with a long-lost love. She might not be sobbing at all, but allergies are making her eyes wet. All of those are possible outcomes, or none at all. Whatever the case, the image accurately captured the facts as they stood at that precise time. We may decide how to interpret such facts.
