Artist Uses Thousands Of Coins To Turn Ordinary Floor Into Mosaic Masterpiece

When Kat Von D uploaded the pictures of her magnificent penny floor on her Instagram, everyone was absolutely taken aback. Certainly, the majority of people do love the idea of adorning their floors with coins shining and having different shades.

However, not long after, people found out that the idea of such a DIY coin ground was first come up with by a jeweler named Kelly Graham, who finished decorating her brilliant floor mosaic back in 2015.

Up to now, the penny floor has been glorifying her house for nearly 7 years, and when Kat Von D’s post grows more and more popular, Graham decided to share her masterpiece on Facebook as well, making it viral.

As a professional jeweler, Graham has a flair for spatial reasoning, even owning a company called Camias Jewelry Designs, majoring in bridal accessories influenced by Bohemian and Celtic art.

Having possessed a vast number of coins of all types, she came up with the idea to spread thousands of pennies on her 6x6 ft. floor. And that’s how her 7,500-penny-floor project started, which was completed in 2015 with an astonishing mosaic design using coins in various shades.

As soon as the pictures of her own coin floor are posted on her Facebook page, they quickly became popular, being featured on several internet publications internationally.

People keep questioning Graham the method she used, which was then clarified as she only used basic supplies for the completion of the project, beginning by sorting and separating the coins by their shades and sheen.

Graham caulked the back of each coin before putting them in their position on the floor, following the pattern on her mosaic design, then waited for the caulking to solidify before grouting. One week later, the surface was sealed with a poly coat, as it would receive numerous foot traffic.

The penny floor still appears to be in mint condition after 7 years. Graham shares that she’s totally glad that her creativity and hard work are ultimately paying off, even if it took her work 7 years to be appreciated, when asked about the overwhelming attention she has been receiving.

“It was surreal and astounding. I’m so pleased something I made 5 years ago was so well received 5 years later. Case in point, sometimes it takes a while to be seen for something creative or artistic you’ve done, but also a message that you do not ever give up.”, she said.
