Director Of Eternals Discloses The Film's Intended Dreadful Ending

Director Chloé Zhao reveals the original and grimmer ending to Eternals. In November 2021, the third Marvel Cinematic Universe film in Phase 4 will be released exclusively in cinemas. Eternals, led by an all-star ensemble that included Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, and Kumail Nanjiani as strong superheroes, sparked a lot of interest. The film eventually garnered mixed reviews from critics, but viewers reacted well, helping the movie gross more than $400 million worldwide. Audiences are presently eager to see what this means for Eternals 2 and its characters' MCU prospects.
nullThe conclusion of Eternals explicitly set up the scenario that might be explored in a sequel or spinoffs. After Gemma Chan's Sersi utilized the uni-mind to prevent the creation of a Celestial, the group generally dispersed. Madden's Ikaris seemed to perish after flying into the sun, but Jolie's Thena, Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) traveled to space in search of more Eternals, including Harry Styles' Eros. Meanwhile, Arishem kidnapped Sersi, Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), and Nanjiani's Kingo as part of his judgment on humanity. However, it turns out that the finale of Eternals was initially intended to be considerably worse.
nullChloé Zhao shared in an interview as part of the spoiler exclusive podcast episode for Eternals as part of the post-release publicity cycle. This featured discussions on the ideas and progress of Zhao's MCU film, but she also discussed the dynamic nature of filmmaking. This includes talking about the original Eternals finale. Zhao notes that none of her Movies have ever ended with the conclusion she had in mind, and that Eternals was initially supposed to end with the team's memories being wiped.
null“It used to end with everybody back on the ship, minds erased and just going on to another planet, like The Twilight Zone. I remember when it goes to black, everyone was like, "I don't know what to do." And also, it's the MCU, and you want to be excited for what's next.”
nullThe original Eternals conclusion differs from the final edit seen by viewers. Despite Zhao's refusal to acknowledge that she and the cast recorded the darker ending, it appears that this was the original finale when production concluded. This might explain images of Harry Styles dressed as the Eternals before they landed on Earth. He might have been a member of the reset crew, assisting in the replacement of Ajak and Gilgamesh's deaths. Interestingly, the shot may also indicate that Ikaris survived the original conclusion of Eternals.
nullIt would have been intriguing to see how reviewers and fans would have reacted to Eternals with this darker conclusion. The film would effectively serve as a soft relaunch for the characters, allowing them to emerge in a completely another region of the galaxy in the future. Marvel Studios might still take that path, but the finale of Eternals suggests a different scenario. Only time will tell if Zhao will get the opportunity to direct the characters' next steps.
