Batman v Superman Should Never Have Existed, Matthew Vaughn Said
Matthew Vaughn, director of the Kingsman trilogy, initially planned to make a follow-up to Man of Steel alongside actor Henry Cavill, but recently stated his dissatisfaction with the movie that was released: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.
When presenting The King's Man, the spy saga's prequel, Vaughn told TheWrap that the combination of Superman's bright setting and Batman's dark atmosphere was a horrible match. "I just thought it was a mistake to bring a Batman vibe into the Superman world. I just think they're two separate things - they're just not relatable in any way, in my mind "He stated.
The very first live-action match of the main superheroes, Batman v Superman, served as a springboard for the DC Extended Universe. However, Vaughn said that the atmosphere was flawed because it pulled too many elements from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns series. Superman: The Movie, directed by Richard Donner, and Wonder Woman, produced by Patty Jenkins, he feels, are better examples of how Batman v Superman should've been.
"It should be fun," Vaughn said of a Superman movie. "I mean, look, The Dark Knight was obviously different, and it made sense and it was brilliant, as a film and as a comic. But Superman was always… I loved the Donner Superman movie, and I think Wonder Woman worked because, I think, Wonder Woman was basically weirdly remaking Superman. Yeah, I love Superman.”
Zack Snyder helmed both Batman v Superman and Man of Steel. It replicated a scenario from The Dark Knight Returns in which Batman fights Superman while wearing high-tech body armor, as well as aspects from the 1993 crossover comics event "Death of Superman." Vaughn explained his perspective to Superman's plot, revealing that he was not only in the race to shoot the Man of Steel movie, but also attempted to get in first.
"I was desperate to do a Superman film. Desperate. I pitched a big Superman movie before they made Man of Steel," Vaughn said. "I just got to work with Henry Cavill, which was lovely, on Argylle and he's unbelievable in it."
Vaughn's past superhero movies, Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, have quite a different tone, but he says, "I still think there's room for a new Superman film, but a proper Superman film. A colorful, fun Superman movie. Not a dark one."
