Last year, Tiktok only ranked #7 or #8 on Cloudflare’s list; however, it ascended the ranks to overtake the top place this year, according to the said company.
Before that, TikTok had surpassed 1 billion users in the world in September 2021. It is known that at the present time, every 1 minute on the internet, TikTok will reach 167 million video views, while the number of searches performed on Google is only 5.7 million, 240,000 photo shares on Facebook and and 694,000 hours of streaming on Youtube.
"It was on February 17, 2021, that TikTok got the top spot for a day," Cloudflare wrote in its year-in-review blog post. "Back in March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it was after August 10, 2021, that TikTok took the lead on most days. There were some days when Google was #1, but October and November were mostly TikTok’s days, including on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26)."
With its global popularity, TikTok quickly topped the list of most visited websites, surpassing many big names like Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter and WhatsApp, all of which were ranked by Cloudflare in that order.
TikTok has surpassed Facebook as the most popular social media website, in addition to being named the most popular domain by Cloudflare.
"In what was the second year of the pandemic, social media domains continued high on our ranking," Cloudflare wrote in its blog. "The nine main social media applications were all in our top 100 list of most popular global domains ... We can see that TikTok ... took Facebook from its crown of the most popular social media website-domain in our ranking."
The Wall Street Journal of the US said: "Like other social-media sites, TikTok has its dark side. The video-sharing app’s algorithms can drive minors to videos about sex, drugs and eating disorders.
But TikTok really was everywhere this year."
