Since 2013, Ross Ulbricht has been serving a double life sentence for creating Silk Road, an online black market where users can buy and sell drugs and other illegal goods with cryptocurrencies and dark web.
However, according to a report from Blockworks, this didn't stop him from making $6 million from an NFT file while in prison. This fund was raised from over a thousand crypto investors through FreeRossDAO – a type of decentralized autonomous organization – half of which was used to buy Ulbricht NFT files.
"This is just the beginning." FreeRossDAO's tweet said. " We still have a long way to go to seek justice and rectify his disproportionate sentence."

This DAO was established in November of this year when the Ulbricht NFT collection was announced. Dubbed the "Genesis Collection," this collection of NFT files includes handwritten manuscripts as well as pencil artwork created by Ulbricht during his childhood and pre-prison years.
Unlike normal citizens, for most prisoners, even sending an email costs money, and this financial burden often falls on families where someone is incarcerated. A report in Newsweek earlier this year said it would cost prisoners up to 25 cents to send an email, and up to 75 cents for a video message.
So, the aforementioned NFT sale will greatly ease the burden on Ulbricht's prison life while he has a long way to go. Even so, perhaps not all prisoners can make money by doing this. NFT may be all over the world right now – but it only appeals to the people who are famous enough.
