“Person of the Year is a marker of influence, and few individuals have had more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and potentially life off Earth, too. In 2021, Musk emerged not just as the world’s richest person but also as perhaps the richest example of a massive shift in our society," wrote Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal.
2021 is a year of great success for Elon Musk. The 50-year-old CEO has become the richest man in the world, partly thanks to the sharp increase in Tesla shares. With SpaceX, Musk carried out the first mission to Earth orbit with a crew of only tourists and no professional astronauts.
In the Person of the Year article, Editor-in-Chief Felsenthal highlighted Elon Musk's personality, describing it as "a crude tool that seems to like to cause division and ridicule" - something the public often sees from the public. shared on Twitter by the American billionaire.

" The richest man in the world does not own a house and has recently been selling off his fortune. He tosses satellites into orbit and harnesses the sun; he drives a car he created that uses no gas and barely needs a driver. With a flick of his finger, the stock market soars or swoons. An army of devotees hangs on his every utterance. He dreams of Mars as he bestrides Earth, square-jawed and indomitable," Time writes about Elon Musk.
Time magazine began selecting "Man of the Year" in 1927, after which there were a number of changes, not only individual selection but also considering the impact of the most influential group, movement or idea in the past year. In 2020, US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were jointly selected as "Person of the Year".
Time's annual selection isn't necessarily a tribute because the character chosen can also be a negative influence. For example, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was chosen as "Man of the Year" in 1938.
