31 Honest Drawings Exposing The Truths About Modern Society That Make You Think
Today's world still has a lot of dark sides that are covered up. However, people don't dare speak up and discuss the bad things happening in their lives because they're afraid of being criticized for going against the world. Thankfully, some artists out there have bravely used art to expose society's harsh reality in the hope of changing people's awareness and then acting with the right mindset.
Apart from pleasing our eyes, drawings also transfer ideas and provoke thought on social issues. Sometimes, we can see the whole story and realize messages hidden in one picture. Are you in doubt? Let us introduce you to Austrian artist Gerhard Haderer, who has been producing satirical illustrations for adults for decades and highlights the problems of modern society only with his one-panel drawings.
There's no denying that social issues are always a difficult and sensitive topic for most artists to talk about—a controversial subject. Indeed, artist Gerhard Haderer had to face the court because of his brutally honest book "The Life of Jesus". The book received violent reactions from the Catholic Church and especially, Greece saw it as an insult to religion which gave Gerhard a six-month suspended sentence in absentia. However, this verdict was corrected on appeal, and our artist was acquitted a few months later.
As he shared, the illustrator developed his realistic style when he worked as a graphic designer for advertising agencies. After he got cancer in 1985, he quit his job and worked as a freelance caricaturist and satirical illustrator, concentrating mainly on social matters.
