As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed plans for many, and among these plans are college graduations. Unfortunately, all graduation ceremonies were wiped out and many students felt down as they missed this important event. Their ceremonies were done virtually, and they didn’t get any pictures, congratulations, and commemoration. For this reason, many families are having to find creative ways to celebrate graduations.

Just like most other graduates, Gabrielle Pierce was upset when her university, Xavier University of Louisiana cancelled the graduation. However, she was lucky enough to have a wonderful dad who turned her dream into reality. Her father, Torrence Burson decided to create a ceremony himself right in the driveway of his house. He wanted to give his beloved daughter the college graduation ceremony she deserved.

Of course, when he came up with the idea, everyone told him he was crazy, but he didn't care. He set up a stage and ordered graduation equipment from a local convention center. He even invited some friends and family members to play presenters. Friends, family, and neighbors lined the street, cheering the girl as she got to walk up the elaborate stage to receive her precious certificate.
“After all those years, you’re going to walk across somebody’s stage if I have to build you one myself,” the dad reportedly told his daughter. “I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night and said, ‘that’s it. I’m just going to be the graduation here.”

Gabrielle said that the ceremony was better than a regular graduation ceremony because it touched her heart at more intimate chords. She was in her home and surrounded by her beloved ones.
“I was just in awe. I was amazed. I couldn’t believe a lot of people showed up. People were driving by yelling congratulations. It was just amazing. Better than the actual graduation, because it was more personal.” said Gabrielle.

Following her graduation, she plans to join the Air National Guard and pursues a masters degree in epidemiology. She one day hopes to work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Her father is proud of her daughter. “We love our daughter this much. Regardless of the dollar figure, what it took to pull this off, if I had to do this over again, I’d probably do it even bigger,” said Burson.
Congratulations to Gabrielle and every 2020 graduate around the world.
