The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure video game developed by Naughty Dog and released for the PlayStation 3 in June 2013. Set in the aftermath of a modern plague that has turned most people into zombie-like creatures called "infected". The player plays as Joel (Troy Baker), a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie (Ashley Johnson) across the United States to a resistance group known as the Fireflies. In addition to fighting hostile human survivors, Joel and Ellie will also encounter infected along their journey.
The game's story follows Joel and Ellie as they search for their friends after an infection ravages their city and kills most of the population except for them. At the same time, they learn more about each other and themselves along the way.

The Last of Us is one of the most popular games on this list and its popularity has led to a television adaptation. Craig Mazin, the creator and writer of HBO's Chernobyl, created the series. Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog, the studio that created both The Last of Us video games, is developing and executive producing the series.
The Last of Us will be led by Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, both Game of Thrones breakout stars. Tommy will be played by Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate), and Tess by Anna Torv (Mindhunter). Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, and Elaine Miles round out the cast. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who played Ellie and Joel in the video games, play unnamed roles as well.
