11 Epic Quotes From Nimona That Make You Fall In Love With The Character
What would you do if one day, a mysterious girl rushes into your house, turns things upside-down, and then asks to be your sidekick? That is exactly what happens in the movie with Ballister, a promising knight who got wrongly accused of killing the Queen, and now he has to deal with a devilish little kid who aspires to stick it in the kingdom’s face. However, as clingy as she may be, there is no way we can hate Nimona. She’s sweet, she’s mischievous, she’s carefree, can shapeshift into anything she wants, has a dark past, and can get very philosophical sometimes.
Voiced by the talented Chloe Grace Moretz, who has done an excellent job to portray the sweet but troublesome oddball in the Netflix animated movie, Nimona has plenty of memorable lines that will send you on an emotional roller coaster ride of laughter and sadness. Let’s take a look at these 11 most “metal” quotes of Nimona in the film, and see for yourself what a special sidekick she is.
#1. “I’m Nimona.”
One of the most frequent phrases that the heroine has repeated over and over again throughout the movie, this line is actually more important than you think. Whenever her identity was questioned by Ballister and the others, she always keeps her answer short: “I’m Nimona.” Why?
Because while Nimona can be many things: she can be a rhino, she can be a whale, a gorilla, a little kid, or a phoenix…all those things are also what makes Nimona who she is. No matter what shape she takes, she’s always the mischievous Nimona that we all know and love. It takes a while for Ballister to understand this simple sentence, but at least he does the right thing in the end.
#2. “So metal.”
As a villain wannabe, Nimona wants to wreak havoc everywhere she sets her foot. After making a mess out of the Academy and successfully rescuing Ballister, Nimona looks proudly at her doing, exclaiming: “Metal”. This is actually a pretty nice touch by the director, implying that the heroine might be a rock fan, as her punk-ish outfit and hairstyle also suggest this theory. Nimona repeats this phrase several more times in the movie, and she even influences Ballister to say it once as well.
#3. “Once everyone sees you as a villain, that’s what you are. They only see you one way, no matter how hard you try.”
Nimona said this when she was about to save Ballister from imprisonment in the castle. This quote hits even harder after we learn more about her dark past, when she was treated like a monster by everyone else, including her best friend Gloreth, no matter what she tried to do. Nimona basically said this line out of experience, and Ballister didn’t really understand this until the end of the movie.
#4. “They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I’m the monster?”
This devastating line makes us feel for Nimona, as she was struggling to get accepted by society for over a thousand years. However, we can also relate it to real life, where the different ones are shunned and treated like outcasts by the majority. Who’s the real monster here: Nimona, or the knights?
#5. “I don’t know what’s scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart, or that sometimes I just want to let them.”
Few animated movies dare to tackle the subject of depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts, but Nimona doesn’t shy away from any of them. Although she’s an immortal being who has lived for thousands of years, she’s still a little kid at heart, who’s vulnerable to threats, insults, and loneliness. No wonder after years and years of running away from humans’ blades, she gets tired of running, and just wants to end her suffering.
This feeling gets even stronger when she turns into a monster and is cornered by the knights, which leads her to find her own death by stabbing herself with Groleth’s sword. The strong-willed and cheerful Nimona has given up on life at that point, until Ballister saves her.
#6. “This is the part where you run.”
One of the funnier lines in a drama-filled movie. Right after saying this, Nimona showcases her incredible shapeshifting abilities, turning into a rhino, a gorilla, and even a whale to bulldoze everything in her path, and causes chaos in the Knight Institute. I mean, who wouldn’t freak out when they’re chased by a 6 feet rhinoceros?
#7. “That guy just peed his armor! He peed his armor!”
After getting to know Nimona better, Ballister grows to like her a bit more. When fighting against Ambrosius, he showers his sidekick with praises, dubbing her “smart, kind, and quite sophisticated”, only for Nimona to ruin the moment by screaming the above line. Easily one of the most hysterical moments of the movie.
#8. “I wouldn’t die. I just sure wouldn’t be living.”
This is Nimona’s answer when Ballister asks her to refrain from shape-shifting, which a lot of us can relate to. Shapeshifting is in Nimona’s nature, it’s what she does every day. Refrains herself from doing it is like forcing her to stop being who she is, and to Nimona, it feels akin to dying. Nimona’s sentences can also be related to the LGBTQ community, who wants nothing more than to live freely as their true self and get recognized by society.
#9. “I’m not a kid. I’m a shark. Chomp chomp.”
All of Nimona’s childishness, playfulness and humor are displayed in this one scene that never fails to make us go “Aww!” Nimona is the sweetest and most chaotic cinnamon roll ever, and you know it. The shark dance between Nimona and Ballister later in the movie is basically the icing on the cake.
#10. “Here’s the thing, when we clear your name then I am your official sidekick forever and ever, no take-backsies, deal?”
This promise between the two hits hard as Nimona is seemingly dead at the end of the movie, which leaves Ballister devastated. Luckily, as the final scene suggests, the heroine somehow survives the blast, and returns to Ballister’s lair to fulfill their promise. The happy ending is exactly what both Nimona and Ballister deserve, after all they’ve been through in the movie.
#11. “Something something, we win.”
The final result is what counts, right?
