John's son Jamie asks to introduce him at the beginning of the speech he will give in honor of the occasion. Before inviting John to the stage, Jamie brings up the fact that the Dutton family has been ranching in the area for five generations and that they were among the first settlers in the state. The people of Montana, says John, are the state's greatest asset, and he vows to defend their traditional way of life, which involves working the land and raising livestock.
The opener establishes John's ambition to work just for the part of Montana that ranches and features sorrowful and meaningful looks between Jamie and his sister Beth, setting up long-term Dutton family turmoil for Season 5. Kayce follows them and forces the crooks to return to the United States. When one runs away to the Canadian justice system for help, Kayce lassos and hauls him back. Kayce utilizes the power of the American justice system as a bargaining chip to convince the Canadian team to let the thieves and their stolen horses stay in the United States. As he rides away, he insults the Canadians by calling them sheep.

Now that he's back in the city, John doesn't look too sure of himself at his swearing-in. He is asked to repeat his name three times by the official before Beth comes up to him and urges him to begin the oath of office. John then confirms what Chief Rainwater and Market Equities had suspected by saying that his first order of business will be to halt funding for the Paradise Valley airport project and adjacent developments. He vows to raise property and sales taxes for foreigners to further discourage investment from outside the country.
Jamie tells Beth he is unsure if such regulations are lawful and that this will set the state back 30 years. Their plan, she says, is to roll the clock back 100 years. Beth gives her father a drink as the family drives away from the ceremony. Jamie is denied when he requests one. Still refusing, John delivers Jamie his drink and urges Beth to prepare Jamie another one. Jamie may be winning over his father, as evidenced by this awkward exchange, even if Beth is still plotting against him. Beth and Jamie get into an argument when Beth suggests receiving campaign donations, and Jamie suggests withdrawing financing for the airport.
John claims he messed up his family and wants Jamie to do as he says for the next four years so that Montana can benefit from his decisions. One who is very much in the throes of pregnancy, Monica, who is still three weeks away from her due date, reports to Kayce that she suffers from severe cramps. Pain causes her to lose focus on the road as she rushes to the hospital with her son Tate. Monica is in a collision with an inattentive driver, a stray buffalo, and a combination of the two.
She and Tate make it through the season, but sadly, her unborn child, whom she and Kayce had named John, does not. Both the accident and the complications that led Monica to the hospital with cramps are possibilities for the cause of death. When they return to the ranch, an adult Carter offers to help John saddle a horse, but the young man declines since Carter doesn't have time.
After getting in the car, John learns they must make a detour to see Kayce, Monica, and Tate in the hospital. There, he sees his son holding the body of his injured wife and hears the news that his grandchild and namesake have died.
