Winners of the "golden shoe" or "golden boot" awards at each World Cup competition are listed below. Just Fontaine, a French player, scored a total of 13 goals during the 1958 World Cup. He did it in just six of the tournament's matches, setting a new record in the process. Miroslav Klose, who plays for Germany, is now leading the World Cup in goals scored with 16. German striker Miroslav Klose holds the record for most goals scored at the FIFA World Cup with 16. Klose scored 16 times in 24 games across four tournaments. Amazingly, despite playing in four World Cups, he scored all four times on just 63 shots.

2. Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima

Klose broke Ronaldo's record for most World Cup goals, which he had held since 2002. Ronaldo had led Brazil to victory in that year's World Cup. He only played in 19 games across three tournaments and scored 15 goals. He scored four goals in his first World Cup appearance in 1998 and eight goals in seven games to earn the Golden Boot award four years later. He was a major reason why Brazil was able to win their sixth World Cup.

German football legend Gerd Muller scored 14 goals in two World Cup competitions. With ten goals that year, he was awarded the Golden Boot. and in the last 15 men's World Cup finals, no player has scored more goals than Muller did in 1970.

The French striker Fontaine holds the record for most goals scored in a single competition. He scored thirteen goals when he played in six games at the 1958 World Cup. Even though he only appeared in one World Cup, his mark has been left for all time.

The legendary Pele ranks #5 on this list, scoring 12 times throughout four World Cup tournaments. Not only did he win the Best Player award at the 1970 World Cup, when he contributed four goals and six assists, but he also won the Golden Boot for the first time.

6. Jurgen Klinsmann and Sandor Kocsis

Klinsmann, a German striker, and Kocsis, a Hungarian legend, scored 11 goals at the World Cup. While representing Hungary at the 1954 World Cup, Kocsis made just one appearance. He finished with 11 goals in just five games at that tournament.
During the 1990 tournament, Klinsmann made his first appearance on the World Cup stage. However, his best goal-scoring performance came in 1994 America, when he netted five goals in five games before Germany was eliminated in the quarterfinals by a surprise loss to Bulgaria.
