The park contacted the veterinarians for assistance as they were concerned that the mother might scream to attract the surrounding 30-elephant herd if they tried to extract the infant.

The team member built a temporary barrier to prevent the potentially aggressive herd from interrupting.

Unfortunately, during the rescue, the mother elephant suddenly lost consciousness, scaring all who came to help them.

“It was impossible to get near the baby while the mother was nearby, so we gave her three doses of tranquilizers, but she moved towards her baby before passing out and hit her head,” said lead national park veterinarian Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak.

The calf suckled milk while her mother fainted in the hole, giving the rescuers some time to rest.

Although the torrential rain made it challenging to approach the pair, the rescue team finally lifted them up successfully with a crane.

Three veterans jumped on the mother’s chest right after she landed on the ground, hoping she would wake up soon. Thankfully, the animal “regained consciousness after being stimulated by both me and the baby”, shared Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak.
