Making a successful movie needs not only a delicate director or talented actors but also professional costume designers. They take responsibility for telling a story through clothing, using the language of fashion to express aspects of a movie, mood, and of course, characters. This job is about much more than putting together a nice outfit, requiring a deep understanding of production, a thorough knowledge of fashion and costuming history, and an eye for creating standout designs.
It takes costume designers months or years to study and create mind-blowing outfits. Designers often spend hours in galleries to copy a costume from an old painting or make dozens of copies of the same dress in their own way. Thanks to them, many of our favorite characters are brought to life and the audience has interesting watching experiences.

A giant hood was a part of the traditional clothes of the women of the Azores islands. According to researchers, this piece of clothing helped women avoid glances from men.

Wikipedialming, Deborah Lynn Scott was tasked to make waterproof clothes thaWikipediaed the 1910s. There were 24 copies of Kate Winslet’s dress because it started to look really bad in salty water.

#3 The suits in The Great Gatsby

For the men’s suits, Brooks Brothers was included in the production of great gatsby costumes. Designers were very careful when making them. On the other hand, Catherine Martin worked with 2 modern clothing brands (Prada and Miu Miu) to create outfits for the female characters.

The costumes in “Little Women” were inspired by paintings. Designer Jacqueline Durran revealed that Winslow Homer’s painting of 2 boys inspired her to create the clothes the characters wore in one of the scenes.

Viewers were impressed by the female character’s iconic green dress. Although the color green is believed to make viewers feel nervous and uncomfortable, the director Joe Wright specially selected it. He thought it’d make the emotions brighter.

In the past, special earrings (called cuffs) that didn’t require piercing the ears were quite popular. The costume designer of Alexander thought that it was an important detail which is why Angelina Jolie’s character was putting on cuffs instead of regular earrings.

The costume designer Karen Patch made a special dress for Kate Hudson with her own hands. The yellow one expressed the beauty of the Isadora pendant that cost more than $5 million at the time. There was an estimated $14,200,000 worth of jewels lent to the film.

The gorgeous dress of Cinderella which was created by Sandy Powell became iconic. But many might not know that it wasn’t easy for her to create it. the light dress was incredibly heavy because the corset and crinoline (skirt cage) were made out of steel. The crew spent about 45 minutes helping the actress put on it.

The dress that Emily Blunt’s character put on for her first meeting with her council is actually a copy of the real dress of Queen Victoria. It still exists today and is on display at Kensington Palace though its color was faded to brown. By the way, all of her costumes were insured for $10,000 each.

In “Pride & Prejudice”, Keira Knightley appeared in dresses with long sleeves exclusively. Thanks to them, the actress hid her toned muscles.
